Quest Thermal IMLI has first spaceflight

Quest Thermal’s Integrated MLI (IMLI) is an advanced, next generation multilayer insulation. IMLI had its first spaceflight in December 2018 on NASA’s Remote Refueling Mission 3. RRM3 is a flight experiment on the ISS to test cryogenic storage and transfer. Source and receiver dewars contained LCH4, the receiver dewar was insulated with IMLI.

IMLI accommodated a complex geometry varying from 2 to 21 layers, with spacial constraints such as G10 shroud.  There was excellent agreement between modeled and measured heat leak (calculated 0.517W, measured 0.515W).  New technologies were developed for a ground strap that minimized heat leak and DAM edge shields that reduced heat leak via open edges (view factor) by 10%.

RRM3 launched in December 2018 on the Falcon 9 CRS-16 launch.  The RRM3 flight experiment suffered failure on main cryocooler. However, in preparation for the transfer NASA performed a test cool down of the receiver dewar using the receiver cooler to temperatures in the 70K-82K range (well below the triple point of methane). Therefore, if NASA had been given the green light to transfer, the receiver dewar would have been able to accept the methane. This means that the IMLI was performing well and IMLI can proudly claim to be TRL 9.

From a mission perspective NASA was able to demonstrate 4+ months of in-space vent-free cryogen storage in the source dewar, the longest-ever in-space vent-free storage of a cryogenic fluid.

IMLI with this successful spaceflight is now at TRL9, and is being designed into several upcoming missions including NASA Green Propellant Infusion Mission and the NASA Lucy mission to Jupiter's Trojan asteroids.
